Preparing the Love to Spa Website, got me thinking about my first time. It actually wasn’t until I was 21. Remember, we are talking about my first Spa Experience. I had just graduated from college and one of my best friends since childhood, Kate had given me a gift certificate to a local spa at a local hotel. I won’t even mention any names as it was a long time ago.
Kate always did know me well, and while she always claimed I was hard to shop for, she somehow always knew what was right up my alley, and so the gift certificate was great, and I was so excited to finally get to experience something that i just deemed as a complete luxury and treat.
I had always been concerned about skin care, and ever since I was a kid had done mini-“facials” at home, so I opted to go with a facial. Now for anyone who has ever had a facial, the difference in your skin after all the of the ministrations of your esthetician, is so notable. Why can’t my skin be like that all the time?!?!?!? That’s sort of a rhetorical question. But I was hooked.
And from there – it just grew, facials, massages, and from there just new and different treatments. Every time I went away, I would build in time for some pampering and check out a new spa or new treatment or service. A love affair with spas was born!
I owe it all to my friend, Kate. One day, years later (and I mean many years), she was talking about a week-long summer camp for her five year-old daughter. She thought my Goddaughter would enjoy “Princess Camp”, but there was a hesitation in her voice too. I asked her what the drawback was. She said, “Well, I am afraid that might end up like you.” I was stunned, you would think that being asked to be a Godmother would mean I was a positive role model for the child. Actually, I think I was a little concerned at having something “Princess” related was something that reminded her of me.
“Well Monday, is Mermaid Day, and they decorate a picture frame with shells and such. Tuesday, is spa day with manicure and pedicures; Wednesday, is hair and mini-facials, and Thursday is Royal Tea.” I started laughing, and said “Well, I don’t know about mermaids, but the other 3 sound like right up my alley, so I can see your concern. But really, she is either going to be a spa girl or she isn’t and if she is, she will discover it sooner or later, whether she is 5 or 21.”
Truthfully, my interest in all things spas and make-up started long before Kate ever got me a gift certificate, but I credit her with being the one to start me on my journey. It was her gift that gave me my first spa treatment. And for that, I would very much like to dedicate my inaugural post in her loving memory.
