So given that I was working my way through a Top 10 List of Destination Spas, it was only a matter of time before I headed out to Miraval, in Tucson, Arizona. I was curious how Miraval compared to Mii Amo, as they are both consistently in the Top 10, and usually jockeying for position.
The first thing I would say I noticed about Miraval is the size. Now this isn’t to say that Mii Amo isn’t big, if you do include the broader Enchantment Resort, it is of a fair size. But when I visit Mii Amo, I stay at the Spa Casitas, so everything is just right there.
And with the size, come the crowds of people. There were just a lot more people on the property, at the restaurants, and in the spa, and hanging by the pools, etc. The activity list is also very extensive, maybe not so much in the traditional classes, and lectures, but one of things that distinguishes Miraval is the activities like Swing and Prayer, or horse, and as well as other Team Building exercises. I still think back, reflect and work to incorporate the very profound insights that I learned through those experiences.
Miraval also offers a wide variety of treatments and activities that allow guest to explore mind, body and soul, and here too is place where you will find “new age” services like astrology and mediums, etc. It was at Miraval that I first got to try Aerial Yoga, something that I truly have enjoyed and have been lucky enough to find classes locally. The Spa Menu also has a number of treatments, including some new things I was able to try for the first time like Chi Ne Tsang.
Between my first visit and my second visit, Miraval did change ownership, and I detected some subtle changes in some of the details that downgraded my initial opinion of Miraval. I think to the average person, it is largely undetectable, it’s just I have a very discerning eye as it comes to spas. I think folks who are looking for a lot of different daily activities, and are coming with friends, family, couples, etc, will enjoy their time at Miraval, especially if they like the energy of more people around, etc.
For me, there are a lot of things I like about Miraval, and treatments and activities I can’t get anywhere else. And as I said, some profound lessons I learned that I still think about to this day. But I also didn’t feel it was for me. So I hope to be back someday, but there are definitely other spas I would try and/or return to again before Miraval. I do however have a reminder of Miraval all the time, as I love my Spa Rubber Duckie!
