The Spa at the Intercontinental Hotel in the Escazu Neighborhood, outside of San Jose, Costa Rica claims to be the largest urban spa in Central America, so of course I had to check it out.
As a hotel spa, the locker room is used for not only spa-goers but also those looking to work out in the gym. So, the locker room in the hotel spa is a little tight with respect to getting changed, but not unexpected when you are in the category of hotel spas.
There is a small little retreat pool off the woman’s locker room. However, on the resort property itself there are two pools and a hot tub, so this is really just for the use of those at the spa or gym.
The waiting area is small with only 4 lounge chairs. This may be sufficient if the hotel does not have a lot
of treatment rooms, (i.e simultaneous sessions) and is able to manage the traffic of spa goers and appointment times. There were two other patrons waiting for their therapists at the time I was.
All of the treatment rooms are off a courtyard outside of the waiting room. So you walk under a covered (it is Costa Rica after all) walkway to your treatment room. There is also a private suite and couples retreat on the spa grounds as well.
The spa menu was simple, but had the basics. And my service was relaxing and what I needed. All in all, I think the spa at the Intercontinental Hotel in Costa Rica provides a nice spa experience for its guests, be it residents of Costa Rica who take advantage of the pool the hotel amenities on the weekends, or its guests who are in town for work or for pleasure and want (or need) a little spa time.
