Toppers Spa (Newtown, PA)

Toppers Spa is another one of those Philly Institutions. What initially started as a Day Spa near Rittenhouse Philadelphia has now expanded into several locations throughout the Philadelphia suburbs, as well as expansion opportunities, places like Dover Downs casino and race track, etc.

In its original expansion, Toppers expanded each new place with a different theme. Its original location is more of a French country –side.   In Bucks County it is a Japanese inspired theme.

Toppers is really a chain Day Spa, unique to the local Philly area. As other chains like Massage Envy and Hand and Stone have come in to the area, Toppers has gone to a membership style pricing in addition to its ala carte services.

I was a Toppers regular, being one of their locations was only a few minutes away, until my therapist open up her own place (see M-Spa). However, in Bucks County, there are a number of other options, including David J. Witchell, and Namaste among others.

At the Bucks County location, the Japanese style theme is soothing enough and the staff and therapists are very friendly and skilled.   But some of the small details detract from the overall experience. The main waiting area, is in the center of the location between the front operations and the treatment rooms in the back, and so during the change over of treatment rooms, the staff is running back and forth and walking in between the waiting patrons. I have found the quality of the robes to be lacking in the past – robes with frayed edges and belts, and yet these were acceptable to be presentable for guests.

If I make it to some of the other Toppers locations, I will see if things improve, but luckily for me, I have other options in Bucks County to keep me spa’ing.
